Conditions

  1. An area of 3m all around and above barbecue completely clear of flammable material.
  2. An adult is in attendance at all times.
  3. Wind speed of less than 10kph (i.e. light breeze).
  4. Fire is not lit within 7.5m of any log, stump, crop or forest.
  5. Sufficient water is on hand in case of an emergency (either from a tap and hose or a knapsack spray or fire extinguisher containing at least 10 litres of water).
  6. The fire is located within 20m of a permanent dwelling.
  7. At least 10 litres of water is on hand in case of an emergency.
  8. A tap with hose connected is ready for use.
  9. Fully contained in a proper fireplace or trench at least 30cm deep.
  10. Fire is no larger than one square metre.
  11. Check with local authority for local laws restricting use of incinerators and open air burning.
  12. Incinerator is in good condition and has an effective lid complying with regulations.
  13. An area of 3m around the work is kept cleared of all flammable material or kept wetted down.
  14. Machinery has a New Zealand Standards approved spark arrestor and is free of mechanical defects which could start a fire.
  15. Sufficient water on hand in case of fire. Operators of tractors and road maintenance equipment must carry a knapsack spray or fire extinguisher charged with at least 9 litres of water.
