The best way to protect your home is to 'starve' a vegetation fire as it approaches. That means removing as much flammable material as possible in a 'defensible area' of up to 20 metres around your house. The defensible space will not only reduce the possibility of flames reaching your house, it will also provide a safe space to allow firefighters room to defend the property should the need arise.
Reduce risks
Forest plantings should be at least 10 metres back from boundary fences.
Driveways need to be clear for emergency vehicles (3m x 3m).
Signpost water supplies.
Ensure trees and tree limbs are kept pruned and well away from homes and power lines.
Keep gutters clear, remove leaf litter and loose bark.
Keep the grass mown around your home.
Dispose of cigarettes carefully.
Further information on reducing risks is available.
Rural residents - know your RAPID number (write it by your telephone) and ensure it can be seen clearly from the road.
Have a hose attached to your water tap.
Report any suspicious activities.
Know where water/fire extinguishers are.
Have a three metre clearance down your driveway for access for emergency services.
Have a 70mm suction coupling on your water tank.
Be safe
Dial 111 for fire.
Ensure everyone evacuates the house.
Don't go back into a burning structure.
Stay away from vegetation fires.
