To ensure that there are high standard facilities for the cremation and/or burial of deceased persons in accordance with the Burial and Cremation Act. This includes attractive park-like settings for family and friends to remember loved ones. To create and preserve a cultural institution for the community, and provide a place of remembrance that is visually pleasing. To add to the overall amenity, image and historical values of the District.

1. Standard lawn, cremation lawn, children's lawn, stillborn area, returned services lawn - with pre-placed beams for headstones.
2. Rose garden for cremation ashes.
3. Cremation service, including chapel.
4. Access and parking areas, seats, tap water for flowers, shade trees and hedges.
5. Book of Remembrance - available for viewing between 8am and 4.30pm weekdays at Aramoho Crematorium or by appointment.
   

• Graves are kept free of weeds and grass, with grounds kept litter free. (The Council does not maintain the graves and headstones themselves).
• Grass is mown with a catcher in specified areas of high presentation, otherwise kept to a height of between 30mm - 50mm.
• Trees and plantings are maintained to provide a pleasant appearance.
• Roses are pruned and fertilised annually, dead-headed while in flower and sprayed every six weeks to keep them in good health.
• Cultural and religious requirements are respected e.g. restoration of graves is not undertaken until all mourners have left the site.
• An accurate record of all cremations and burials is maintained.
  

Pursuant to regulation 35 of the Local Electoral Regulations 2001, special voting documents for the Local Authority Elections to be held on Saturday, 13 October 2001, may be obtained from the Special Voting Booth, First Floor, Wanganui District Council Chambers, from Monday, 24 September 2001, to Friday, 12 October 2001, between the hours of 8.30am and 4.30pm daily and also Saturday, 13 October 2001, between the hours of 9.00am and noon.

Persons Entitled to Vote as Special Voters

Any elector may vote at an election or poll as a special voter if -
(a) the elector's name does not appear on the copy of the roll used for that election or poll or has been wrongly deleted from that copy; or
(b) in the case of an election or poll relating to a ward, community, or constituency, the elector has qualified as an elector and the name of the elector is entered on a roll for the territorial authority or other local authority in whose district or region the ward, community, or constituency is situated, but is not entered on a roll in respect of that ward, community, or constituency; or
(c) the elector is a person who is a qualified residential or ratepayer elector under Section 20 (2) or (3) of the Act; but their name is not on the electoral roll or their voting entitlement is incorrectly recorded on that roll; or
(d) the elector spoils, loses, or does not receive his or her voting documents; or
(e) the elector satisfies the electoral officer that it will not be possible or practicable for the elector to vote by casting an ordinary vote without incurring hardship or undue inconvenience.

The Wanganui District Council wishes to sell by tender the former Council Plant Nursery located at 16 Abbot Street. The entire property is contained in a 8,896 square metre rear lot and comprises a number of structures including glasshouses, a workshop, tunnel houses, shade house and toilet block.

The Council's preference is to sell the property. However, if no tenders are received, the Council will consider other options, such as lease proposals or offers to purchase, for removal, individual structures or other items. The Tender Pack also contains the appropriate form for parties to register their interest.

Notice of proposed temporary road closure to vehicular traffic
[Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965]

The Wanganui Car Club, for the purpose of a hill climb event, proposes to close Okoia Hill Road from 100 metres before the junction with Matarawa Valley Road to the intersection with No. 2 Line on Sunday, 4 November 2001, from 9.00am until 6.00pm.

During the closure, provision will be made for ordinary vehicular traffic which would otherwise use Okoia Hill Road.

Any person objecting to the proposed road closure should lodge notice of his/her objections and grounds thereof in writing before 7 October 2001 at the Wanganui District Council, 101 Guyton Street, Wanganui.

Wanganui Community Awards

Nominations for the Wanganui Community Awards are now being sought.

The Awards will be made to persons who have carried out meritorious voluntary service in Wanganui.

Applicants will require to be nominated by two citizens of Wanganui, or a bona fide organisation.

Previous nominations will not be considered for selection. Only those persons nominated this year will be considered, as nominations do not "roll over" annually.
