Issue No. 22 - 3 November 2001

At Your Service - Libraries

We provide libraries

  • To ensure that the Wanganui District community is well informed, with a constant informational 'window' on the world.
  • So that the knowledge base and learning infrastructure of the Wanganui District is well-resourced for research, study and life-long learning.
  • To foster the literate and empowered future of Wanganui children.
  • Because reading is one of the most popular lifestyle and leisure choices of New Zealanders today, and we are committed to supporting that.

We provide this service via:

A central library - the 'Davis' at Queens Park.
A heritage research library - the 'Alexander' at Queens Park.
A mobile library, serving schools, rest homes, suburban and rural communities.

Community organisations support Christmas Parade

Preparations are gearing up for the Wanganui Christmas Parade on November 24.

Last Tuesday His Worship the Mayor hosted a function for community organisations which have so far put in an entry for the revamped Christmas Parade. The parade is organised by Mainstreet Wanganui and this year is being supported by the Council, Bob Burgess Holden and Whanganui Community Foundation.

"Community organisations are very supportive towards producing floats for the Wanganui Christmas Parade, and the standard of entries has improved over the last few years," Mainstreet Wanganui marketing manager Melinda Cade said.

"However, in the past there has been little thanks for the tremendous efforts these organisations put in to helping stage the event. Last week's function provided an opportunity for the community who are involved to mingle with their peers, swap ideas, and generally feel good at what they do for the community."

Organisations which want to participate in the parade need to register with Mainstreet Wanganui before November 14.

Soakpit search

The quest is on for the perfect soakpit or alternative on-site stormwater disposal method.

If you have a clever idea to dispose of your stormwater that would help other people then we would like to know.

The Council is offering prizes to people who can come up with innovative ways of stormwater disposal, including different methods of installing soakpits. The competition is open to anyone who is not in the trade and will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Cost savings for home owners
  • Minimised disruption to property
  • Low maintenance
  • Innovation
  • Ability to cope with rainstorms
  • Compliance with all Council requirements (see Stormwater Separation Guide)
  • The potential to be used by others

Entries must include photographs and/or drawings as well as a description suitable for publication.

The Council will be the sole judge of all entries.

Entries should be addressed to:

Stormwater Separation Co-ordinator
Wanganui District Council
PO Box 637
Wanganui

And will be accepted up to 5pm on Monday, 12 November 2001.

For a free copy of the Separation Guide, please phone the Hotline on 349 0548.

Fortnightly Rural Bag Collection Contract
November 2001 - April 2002

The Council's new contractor, Budget Waste, will take over the rural rubbish bag collection from Tuesday, November 6.

Collection days remain the same, but bags will be collected fortnightly not weekly. Correctly packaged recyclables will be collected.

The Papaiti bin site has been closed and a bag pick-up point established on Papaiti Road.

Yellow stickers will not be valid in the rural area after November 1. The urban area is not affected by this change.

The Budget Waste system offers the options of pink stickers, or blue or yellow prepaid bags.

Rural residents with excess yellow stickers are welcome to exchange these for pink stickers at the Wanganui District Council office, Treasury Services counter, 101 Guyton Street. This exchange offer is available until the end of November.

Rural residents will receive Budget Waste leaflets about the collection dates. If you have not received a leaflet please contact Budget Waste. The Budget Waste help telephone number is 344 4201.

If you would like more information, please contact Larry Jones at the Council on 349 0001.
