Issue No. 3 - 23rd June 2001

Wanganui's weather

The Council regularly receives calls from interested members of the public asking why the temperatures we experience in Wanganui do not seem to be reflected in the television readings.

There are two weather stations located in Wanganui. One, which is administered by the Met Service, is located near the airport and is used to obtain data for the TV weather forecasts and various other places.

The second weather station is located at Spriggens Park and is administrated by the Council. This station provides data which is downloaded weekly, although it can be downloaded more often if needed. The data is stored in the computer system at the Council and is available free of charge to anyone who requires it.

Due to the different locations of the stations, there is a noticeable difference in the readings.

The data provided by the Spriggens Park station includes minimum and maximum temperature readings, rainfall, grass temperatures, humidity etc. Measurements are taken at 10-minute intervals during the day, which runs from 8.10am-8am the following day.

People wanting any information from the Spriggens Park station are most welcome to contact Amanda Thomas-Pritchard at the Council, phone 349 0001 extension 8181, or email amandat@wanganui.govt.nz.
