Issue No. 37 - 16 February 2002

At Your Service - Whanganui River Control

We provide river control

  • To ensure the river banks are kept in a stable and safe condition so that both people and services are protected.

How this service is provided

The banks of the Whanganui River from the sea to Kukuta are monitored for erosion, slippage and debris and repaired as necessary. (horizons.mw Regional Council manages the waterway itself).

Services provided

  1. Boat ramps at Wharf Street, Putiki, and Aramoho motor camp are cleared of silt and debris to ensure boat access is available to the river, particularly for the Coastguard and rescue services. Assistance is also given to clear the Motor Boat Club boat ramp.
  2. Vegetation is trimmed where it could threaten bank stability.
  3. Protection works are undertaken to counteract erosion/slippage. Riverbanks within the urban area are stabilised and maintained as determined by the Lower Whanganui River Study.

Cost

The average ratepayer pays $30 per year.

Further information about Whanganui River control is available from Ian McGowan at the Council office, phone 349 0001 or email ianm@wanganui.govt.nz.

2002 climate outlook: a change for our region?

NIWA's Dr Jim Salinger is back to explain the crazy patterns of summer and changes in store for the Wanganui District in 2002.

There are indications that an El Nino may occur later this year. Measurements of the equatorial Pacific and results from climate modelling suggest the development of an El Nino over the next three to six months. However, climate scientists looking at the atmospheric stew say that the jury is out for another six to eight weeks at the moment.

"We have a patient that is showing one or two symptoms at the moment but we have to see if they develop further," Dr Salinger said.

El Nino episodes have been blamed for farming losses of hundreds of millions of dollars in New Zealand, the 1994 Auckland water shortage and the high temperatures and dry weather of the 1997/98 east coast drought.

You're invited to hear more from Dr Salinger about climate predictions for 2002:

When: 11am on Tuesday, February 19.
