Issue No. 38 - 23 February 2002

Reminder: motorists give way to pedestrians

A number of pedestrians have experienced some apprehension with conflicting traffic movements when crossing over the Guyton Street/St Hill Street intersection.

At changes of traffic light cycles, pedestrians receive a green light phase parallel with the traffic flow. This coincides with a left or right turn phase for traffic. The pedestrian signal phase will change to red within a few seconds while the vehicle traffic signal stays green; however, pedestrians generally will not have had sufficient time to cross the road.

Motorists have a legal obligation to give way to pedestrians while they are crossing.

Regulatory signs (pictured) are erected at all approaches to the intersection, requesting motorists who are turning to give way to pedestrians.
