Issue No. 39 - 2 March 2002

Titoki Wetland wins RAMSAR award

Titoki Wetland was once an area used for illegal dumping of rubbish.

However, things started to change when two nuns contacted the Council wanting the area to be cleaned up. Since then the residents, Maruia Society, Department of Conservation, Royal Forest, Bird and Wanganui Polytechnic Conservation Corps and the Council planned the restoration of Titoki. Various groups, including Whanganui Tree Trust, Community Projects Team and PD workers, have worked together to make the wetland what it is today.

On World Wetland Day Titoki Wetland received the 2002 Ramsar New Zealand Wetland Award.

Environment Manager Richard Munneke said the Council was proud to receive the award in recognition of the hard work by the Council and community.

"The Titoki Wetland project has been carried out 'on the smell of an oily rag'," Richard said.

"It shows what can be done by local people and committed community groups. Go and see for yourself."

Wastewater discharge to the Whanganui River

Recreational users are advised of potential health risks arising from the discharge of wastewater to the Whanganui River.

Under the coastal permits issued for the wastewater project, the Wanganui District Council is required to regularly inform the public of these potential risks.

At present, the existing combined sewer and stormwater system overflows and discharges wastewater into the Whanganui River during periods of rain. However, this overflow will be eliminated progressively as sewage is removed from stormwater systems on both private and public property throughout urban Wanganui.

Property owners are reminded that all sewage must leave their property in a separate pipe that contains no stormwater by the following dates:

Aramoho 1 July 2002
Wanganui East/Bastia Hill 1 July 2003
Central City 1 July 2004
St John's, Durie Hill, Springvale and Putiki 1 July 2005
Gonville East/Mosston 1 July 2006
Gonville West and Castlecliff 1 July 2007
