Bridge 47 at Mangamahu opening celebration
Bridge 47 will be officially opened by Mayor Michael Laws who will be joined by Members of Parliament, District Councillors and local residents. Bridge 47 replaces the Ngaturi Bridge which collapsed during the July 2006 storm which hit the Wanganui District. Access to the remote Mangamahu community was originally restored in August 2006 with the construction of a temporary Bailey Bridge, officially opened by the then Minister of Civil Defence Hon. Rick Barker. The temporary bridge was funded by the government and built by Transit New Zealand. The Hon. Rick Barker will also be attending Monday's ceremony. The new 85 metre long bridge will be the first network arch bridge to be constructed in New Zealand. The 'network arch' structure is a form of tied arch bridge where the hangers which support the deck slab are inclined and cross one another at least twice. The structure means the bridge is efficient in terms of materials and will also provide improved performance in a flood. Mayor Laws will cut the ribbon to officially open the bridge at 3.00pm on Monday. "Once again Wanganui is leading the way in New Zealand – this time with an innovative infrastructure project creating a permanent and stunning bridge for the local Mangamahu community." |

Somme Parade shared pathway
Work has begun on the construction of a three metre wide riverside pathway from the Dublin Street Bridge to opposite Bates Street The new pathway will sit between Somme Parade and the riverbank and will encroach onto Somme Parade in some areas so roadworks and revamped pavement markings will be necessary. The new path will be constructed of concrete and asphalt. In some areas where Council is planning further development, it will consist of unsealed shellrock. During construction, traffic will be controlled and disruption kept to a minimum. Pedestrians using the existing path and grassed riverside areas will be diverted to the city side of Somme Parade where necessary. Work will continue through to August 2009. |
