Issue No. 44 - 6 April 2002

Kerbside recycling

The Council is proposing to stop its kerbside recycling collection service.

In its Draft Annual Plan (2002/03), the Council signals its intention to save money by stopping the service. This means that unless someone in the private sector decides to provide the service, there will be no kerbside recycling collection from 1 July 2002.

What would it cost to keep the service?

If the Council continued to pick up recyclables from the kerbside, each ratepayer would pay $18 per year for that service - but you could save up to $60 per year on rubbish collection fees by saving space in rubbish bags.

What will happen to recyclables?

It is possible that if the Council withdraws from the service, the private sector may provide a kerbside collection service.

There are facilities for recycling at both waste transfer stations so regardless of whether or not the Council picks up recyclables, you will still be able to drop off recyclables at the transfer stations.

What do you think?

  • Do you want to pay for kerbside recycling collection through rates?
  • Do you think waste transfer station drop-offs are enough?
  • Do you think other companies will provide a kerbside recycling service?

You can have your say about recycling through the Council's Annual Plan submission process. Pick up copies of our plans and a submission form from the Customer Services Desk or the District Library.
