Issue No. 477 - 29 July 2010
Heritage Building Assessment Assistance Fund

Wanganui District Council operates a fund to help preserve and upgrade heritage buildings in the district.

Owners or purchasers are able to have a preliminary expert report done for a building so they know what is needed to comply with the Building Act 2004. Assistance is given as a dollar for dollar grant to a maximum grant of $1500 for any one report.

Funds must be applied for before reports are written to ensure reports are written by professionals giving valid advice and information. Over time Council is building up a library of reports to establish the state of the District's heritage buildings.

The Fund is not for detailed design or physical works but for assessing the condition and necessary works for a building. This will vary depending on the intended use of the building. The fund is available for buildings in the Old Town Conservation Zone (Overlay Zone) and the Central Commercial Zone and any other non-residential building included in the District Plan Heritage list.

Information and application forms are available from the Council's Customer Services Desk, 101 Guyton Street, on this page (PDF, 66KB) or by phoning Council on (06) 349 0001. For any further information contact Clive Aim, phone (06) 349 0001 ext. 8102.

Wastewater discharge to the Whanganui River

Recreational users are advised of potential health risks arising from the discharge of wastewater to the Whanganui River.

Under the coastal permits issued for the wastewater project, the council is required to regularly inform the public of these potential risks.

At present, the existing combined sewer and stormwater system may overflow and discharge wastewater into the Whanganui River during periods of rain. However, this overflow will be eliminated progressively as sewage is removed from stormwater systems on both private and public property throughout urban Wanganui.

Property owners are reminded that the deadline to comply was 1 July 2007. All sewage must leave their property in a separate pipe that contains no stormwater.

For further information, please contact the Separation Hotline on (06) 349 0001.
