Issue No. 8 - 28th July 2001
International Year of Volunteers
Wanganui's Civil Defence organisation relies on the contribution of many volunteers during a Civil Defence event.

Volunteers play a significant role in our community and this year recognises their value through the International Year of Volunteers.

International Year of Volunteers (IYOV) is a United Nations-designated year devoted to the promotion, recognition, networking and facilitation of volunteers and volunteerism worldwide.

A volunteer is defined as a person who chooses to offer or perform a service without receiving a financial reward.

The role of volunteers in contributing to community wellbeing is recognised and valued by local government in New Zealand. More than a million New Zealanders volunteer their time to support environmental, welfare and recreational needs, as well as health and education.

There are four main goals for the Year:

  • Recognition of volunteers and volunteer action.
  • Promotion of volunteerism and the great contributions of volunteers.
  • Facilitation of volunteer opportunities for people who want to volunteer, for people who need volunteers and for groups that want to help make it happen.
  • Enhanced networking opportunities of all people involved with issues of voluntary activity.

IYOV invites people to get involved in volunteering and to share their talents and time.

Volunteers assist the Council in many areas. In future issues of Community Link, we will be telling you more about how volunteers help the Council and our community.
