Samoan Tsunami Appeal
Wanganui District Council launched an appeal for donations to help victims of the Samoan tsunami in September 2009 and is organising a project to provide assistance to a village in Samoa. In addition, Wanganui specialist Dr PJ Faumui has been in Samoa to provide expert medical care for victims. The Council paid Dr Faumui's airfares.
On December 5 a team of 12 from Wanganui will leave for 10 days in Samoa. They will help with rebuilding in the village of Satitoa, in south-east Upolo.
The team members are Danny Jonas, Keith Smith, Allan MacGibbon, Tim Thorne, Blake Jones, Graham Hoskin, Alan Hoskin, Quinten McGregor, Bruce Baldwin, Bruce Parr, Anne-Marie Emerson and Anna Swainson. They will be accompanied by a member of the local Samoan community, Tumema Ape Solomona. Supporting businesses and organisations are listed on the right of this page.
A 20ft container was delivered to Gilbertsons Mitre 10 Mega on November 13 and was loaded with building materials and equipment needed for the project. It is now being shipped to Samoa, then to Satitoa, arriving December 3 in time for our team's arrival on December 5.
