Samoan Tsunami Appeal
Wanganui District Council launched an appeal for donations to help victims of the Samoan tsunami in September 2009 and has organised a project to provide assistance to a village in Samoa. In addition, Wanganui specialist Dr PJ Faumui has been in Samoa to provide expert medical care for victims. The Council paid Dr Faumui's airfares.
On December 5 a team from Wanganui will leave for 10 days in Samoa. They will help with rebuilding in the village of Satitoa, in south-east Upolo.
The team members are Danny Jonas, Keith Smith, Allan MacGibbon, Tim Thorne, Blake Jones, Graham Hoskin, Alan Hoskin, Quinten McGregor, Bruce Baldwin, Anne-Marie Emerson and Samoan translator Tumena Leafa. Supporting businesses and organisations are listed on the right of this page.
A 20ft container was delivered to Gilbertsons Mitre 10 Mega on November 13 and was loaded with building materials and equipment needed for the project. It is now being shipped to Samoa, then to Satitoa, arriving December 3 in time for our team's arrival on December 5.
The intention is that the team will construct an all-purpose communal building in Satitoa. As well, they will deliver books, sporting and other recreational equipment for the up to 100 children that live in the village.
The reconstruction team leaves with the united blessing and support of the local Samoan community.
