Social Indicators:
Sport/Recreation Summary

The following information is from the Council's Social Indicators Report 2003. The report, which has been updated each year since 1997, measures a broad range of aspects of social well-being in Wanganui.

Sport

  • There is declining involvement in cricket, netball and touch.
  • Involvement in bowls, which had been declining, showed some increase last year.
  • There is more or less the same involvement in golf, soccer, rugby and hockey.
  • There is an increased involvement in the Masters Games and tennis.

Recreation

  • Use of the Library showed general increases from 1995 to 2001 with some decrease in 2002.
  • Visitors, including school and other groups, to the Art Gallery have generally shown an increase from 1994 to 2003.
  • Attendances at Repertory have increased.
  • Swimming at Gonville and Wanganui East has generally declined over the last few years with use of the Splash Centre steady for the last four years.
  • Involvement in Scouts remains about the same.

Rates: instalment 1 - extended date

Reminder - the due date for payment of instalment one of the 2003/04 rates has been extended to Wednesday, September 3.

After this date a penalty will be added.

If you are having difficulty in meeting your rates payments, please enquire about payment options that are available.

Launch of New Mobile Library!

The District Library is delighted to announce the launch date of the Wanganui community's brand-new, state-of-the-art Mobile Library - and everyone's invited to the celebration!

Mobile Library…..Changes to Scheduled Stops

Wanganui District Library advises its valued Mobile Library customers that the current timetable of community visits will cease on Friday, 5 September 2003.

The new timetable of community visits will be printed in Community Link on Saturday, August 30, and is scheduled to start Monday, 15 September 2003.

The establishment of the new timetable follows an extensive review of the current service and responds to demonstrated changes in community need and demand. The Mobile service is a powerful component of the Library's Community Literacy Strategy, enabling the District Library to deliver a quality service to all communities in the District, regardless of location.
