Issue No. 189 - 15 January 2005

Virginia Lake and Winter Gardens

Virginia Lake is one of Wanganui's most popular park areas, attracting locals and visitors to feed the ducks and enjoy the lake and reserve.

During the day, you can take a woodland walk around the lake edge or stroll along the boardwalk beside the lake and view the ducks and wildfowl at close quarters. On your way around the lake there are a number of gardens to enjoy and some magnificent views of the lake and its surroundings.

Other features within the Virginia Lake reserve include the bird aviary, Tainui Statue, Peter Pan Statue and band rotunda.

At night the coin-operated Higginbottom Fountain provides a colourful display which complements the illuminations in the trees and gardens near the lake. The spectacular lighting displays operate year-round.

Even if the weather is poor and you'd rather be inside, a visit to the Winter Gardens will brighten your day.

The Winter Gardens is a feast for the eyes at the moment. Between the tuberous Begonias, Poinsettias, New Guinea Impatiens and many other flowering plant species, you will not be disappointed with the range of colours. Don't miss the themed garden areas outside.

Day or night, Virginia Lake reserve has plenty of attractions for the whole family.
