Gradual improvement plan continuesContinuing a programme of gradual improvement for the Wanganui community was the Council's focus during its recent planning discussions. At a series of meetings held between 22 May 2001 and 5 June 2001, the Council considered 90 public submissions to its Draft 10-Year Plan (2001-2011), Annual Plan (2001-2002) and Service Management Plan. The Council is aiming for a programme of gradual improvement and focused on areas which contribute to the long-term strategies of building community harmony and co-operation; looking after our environment, infrastructure and community facilities; and strengthening our community and improving our neighbourhoods. The Council made a number of changes to the plans following its consideration of the submissions.
After considering the submissions, the Council signalled its intention to carry out further investigations into a number of concerns raised by submitters. During 2001/02, an economic analysis will be done on the costs of maintaining the existing Dublin Street Bridge and the implications of replacing the bridge. A study of rating differentials will also be done during 2001/02. This is the result of a submission which raised the issue of inequities between rates for some commercial properties. The direction and co-ordination of Wanganui's visitor industry and events programmes will be reviewed during the coming year, in consultation with interested groups. Wanganui's waste and recycling system will also come under scrutiny. The Council will review the delivery of solid waste collection in the rural area and recycling services during 2001/02. The Council intends to explore opportunities for private sector delivery of the services, without Council involvement. The three plans are being finalised following the Council's decisions and will be available at the end of June. |
