Issue No. 27 - 08 December 2001

At Your Service - Port

We provide Port facilities

  • To enable goods to be transported by sea and to provide docking facilities for commercial and recreational fishing.

How this service is provided

Port facilities are located at the mouth of the Whanganui River and are managed by a Port company, Ocean Terminals. In order to provide this service the Council manages a harbour endowment portfolio of 46 commercial properties available for lease, the rental income from which is directed to the Port company.

Services provided

  1. 580 lineal metres of wharf space.
  2. Six warehouse buildings totalling 4088 square metres.

Standards

  • Maintenance of the Port basin to keep the waterway clear for vessel access.
  • Maintenance of the buildings suitable for storage use.
  • Maintenance of the wharves suitable for the berthing of vessels.

Monitoring the service

  • Six-monthly reports from Ocean Terminals.

Cost
There is no ratepayer charge for the service. The Port operations receive a minimum of $350,000 per annum generated from harbour endowment property rentals, which are managed by the Council. Ocean Terminals determines charges for Port services.

Further information about the port is available from Mark Daniels at the Council office, phone 349 0001 or email markd@wanganui.govt.nz.
