Another home game for Wanganui rugby team!

RugbyThe Steelformers Wanganui rugby team will once again play on home ground this weekend - this time in the Meads Cup semi final after beating Wairarapa Bush last Saturday, October 7.

The boys played to a home crowd at Cooks Gardens on Saturday, securing a 28-22 win over Wairarapa Bush.

The Wanganui team will take on the fourth qualifier, Mid Canterbury, at Cooks Gardens from 4.35pm this Saturday, October 14, in a bid to win a spot in the Meads Cup final.

If the team beats Mid Canterbury this weekend, Wanganui can look forward to hosting the final game at Cooks Gardens starting at 4.30pm.

Wanganui Rugby Football Union chief executive officer Haig Elgar says with seven wins and a draw so far, the boys are well on track to winning the inaugural Meads Cup.

RugbyMr Elgar is urging the Wanganui community to show their support by heading along to this Saturday's game.

"Support is so important so the more the guys get the better."

So far Wanganui has come out tops against Thames Valley, Horowhenua-Kapiti, South Canterbury, Poverty Bay, Mid Canterbury, North Otago and Wairarapa Bush. The team drew 23-all against King Country in wet conditions at Te Kuiti.

Mayor puts up prizes for punters!

Mayor Michael Laws has put up $1250 worth of prizes for this weekend's Meads Cup semi final match between Wanganui and Mid Canterbury.

The Saturday, October 14, game kicks off at 4.35pm at Cooks Gardens.

Supporters will get 10 chances to win $100 with a catch the ball game at half-time and there'll also be a cash prize of $250 for the best dressed supporter.

If Wanganui makes the final, to be held on October 21, Mayor Laws says he will put up the same amount of prizes as this week’s.
