Issue No. 305 - 5 April 2007
Mayor Michael will dance with broken toe

Dancing with Stars logoDespite two broken bones in his right big toe, and medical advice to the contrary, Mayor Michael Laws has decided to participate in the hit TVNZ show 'Dancing with the Stars' set to start screening on Easter Tuesday.

Mr Laws broke two bones in his toe on Friday afternoon in a mishap at the Wanganui Darts Club hall in Heads Road. Medical advice is that the injury requires significant rest and will take three to four weeks to heal.

"I'm going to upset ACC by continuing to take part, but the opportunity is too important for both Wanganui and my chosen charity, the Cancer Society," said Mr Laws.

The TVNZ producers have told Mr Laws that the decision is his, and his alone, and that they can make the series complete with just seven celebrity dancers.

"If it was just me, I would flag it. It is bloody sore and the pain won't lessen if I keep dancing. I've been told that I'm a fool if I continue, but then I was told that before I even started practicing!

"I accept that. But the publicity for Wanganui will be huge – this is a programme that attracts up to one million TV viewers. There has already been significant background filming featuring the city. Dancing with the StarsYou can't buy that kind of city profile."

Mr Laws said that he hoped TV viewers would understand that "a grimace rather than a grin will be my standard expression for the first couple of weeks. And a limp".

"I also console myself that once I get off my feet, my pain and discomfort is over. Cancer sufferers don't get that option."

Work under way on Upokongaro jetty

Upokongaro JettyLast week work began on driving the piles for the new Upokongaro jetty.

Preparatory work has included removal of willows and clearing obstructions from the riverbed adjacent to the jetty and pontoon sites.

Now pine piles (each 12 metres long) are being put in place on the riverbank and out into the riverbed. They are driven to a depth of 10 metres.

The work is being carried out by Emmetts Civil Construction. It includes a fixed jetty for use by the PS Waimarie and other large vessels and an adjacent pontoon which smaller craft, such as jet boats and canoes, can use.

The facilities will be available to all craft on the Whanganui River but there will be guidelines to ensure use does not conflict with the timetables of regular tourist operators or special events.

Deputy Mayor Dot McKinnon recently visited the work site to see the piles being put in. She is pictured with contractors Wilf Emmett (right) and Grant Fergusson.

Wastewater to be discharged to Whanganui River
from 26 March 2007

All of Wanganui City's domestic wastewater, including sewage and groundwater, will be discharged to the Whanganui River for a period of up to 16 days from March 26.

Beach Rd pump station was shut down at 8.00am on Monday, March 26, to allow work to be done on the pipeline beneath the Whanganui River. This means that sewage will be discharged to the river from March 26 until about April 14.

As part of the wastewater project, the under-river pipeline has to be upgraded to accommodate the higher pressures needed to pump wastewater to the new treatment plant near the Airport.

Engineers have assessed that sleeving the existing pipeline is more cost effective than laying a new line.

The existing line will be emptied, cleaned and cut into on both sides of the river. A 600m length of new pipe will then be pulled through the existing pipeline and connected to Beach Rd pump station and the new rising/falling mains which have been laid across the Airport to the treatment ponds. The falling main will be connected to the existing outfall during the shut-down period.

The work has been scheduled as late as possible within the construction programme for the treatment plant. This is to ensure it causes minimum impact whilst still enabling the plant to be commissioned before the Resource Consent date of 1 July 2007.

The public should be aware that fish and shellfish caught in the river should not be eaten raw. This applies at all times.

Horizons Regional Council has been advised of the operation which is covered by the District Council's consent for the wastewater scheme.
