Your chance to support the Snell statue for Cooks Gardens
The time of 3 minutes 54.4 seconds eclipsed Herb Elliot's record by 0.1 second. To add to the significance of this feat, the race was run on a grass track. This landmark athletic event is well-known and celebrated internationally and many of us remember that night in 1964, but apart from a bronze plaque at Cooks Gardens there is no permanent structure or memorial within Wanganui to recognise this world renowned sporting achievement. That is about to change. Thanks to the efforts of the Wanganui District Council, Sport and Recreation Wanganui, the Cooks Gardens Trust Board, Powerco Wanganui Trust and the Wanganui community, a bronze statue of Peter Snell in action will be placed at Cooks Gardens. To that end, a fundraising drive has commenced with a target of $90,000 required to commission the statue. Already the Powerco Wanganui Trust has donated $25,000 and has promised a commitment to match, dollar-for-dollar, a further $25,000 based on contributions from the Wanganui community. So far the total funds raised have exceeded $33,000. The statue will be a fitting tribute to an athletic accomplishment and a man who not only set four world records in January 1962 and earned a total of three Olympic gold medals, but went on to be recognised as New Zealand's athlete of the 20th Century. Wanganui benefits from Creative Communities funding A history of Wanganui music from the 1950s to the present day on CD (with accompanying booklet) is just one of seven initiatives that benefited from $17,000 worth of arts funding made available through the Council recently. Projects selected in this round ranged from a Jazz Weekend to the Wellington Gilbert and Sullivan Society performance at the Royal Wanganui Opera House. The successful applicants were:
Roughly $30,000 is allocated locally over two funding rounds per year, with the money provided by Creative New Zealand and administered by the Wanganui District Council. Sally Patrick, Community and Cultural Manager, said that there is a popular misconception that only groups or organisations can apply for funding. In fact, all New Zealanders are eligible to apply to the Creative Communities Scheme, either as individuals or groups. Projects seeking assistance must either increase participation in the arts at a local level, or increase the range and diversity of arts at a local level, or enhance and strengthen the local arts sector. The next funding round will be towards the end of this year. Applications can be made through the Wanganui District Council. |
