Wanganui sports teams and individuals will be encouraged by Council to adopt a colour theme and sporting logo that identifies them as Wanganui representatives.

Wanganui District Council's Sport and Activity Committee has recommended that the Council actively encourages sporting codes to adopt uniforms in the core Wanganui colours for representative teams.

Sport and Activity Committee chair Cr Philippa Baker-Hogan said "Historically most cities and provinces have adopted the colour schemes of their representative rugby team. Wanganui rugby has returned to a modern version of the royal blue, black and white 'butcher's apron' strip".

The core Wanganui colours are royal/reflex blue (70% of the uniform), black (20%) and white (10%).

Wanganui teams are currently identified by a range of colours and styles.

"We think it's important to try to adopt a universal colour scheme for all representative teams so they are identified as uniquely Wanganui."

The Council will also encourage use of the tag phrase "Bring it Home", along with a sporting logo. The logo is based on the Wanganui logo with provision for individual sports to include their code in the design. An example of the logo is pictured. Sports which are interested in using the logo should contact Keith Smith at the Council.

With Wanganui fast becoming a centre for glass art, suitable gifts for sports representatives to present to hosts or visitors will be further investigated in co-ordination with Wanganui Inc's Glass Developer.

Proposed Review of Council's Dog Control Policy

The Wanganui District Council wishes to review its current Dog Control Policy and seeks public submissions on the review.

The Council has considered the current Dog Control Policy and has produced an "Issues Paper" highlighting matters it believes need to be considered in the policy review.

Notice is hereby given pursuant to the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives that the Wanganui District Council intends to introduce a Local Bill into Parliament entitled the Prohibition of Gang Insignia Bill.

This is the first notification of the intention to introduce this Bill.

The purpose of this Bill is to reduce the likelihood of intimidation or harassment of the public and to avoid or reduce the potential for confrontation by or between gangs.

To this end the Bill allows for new bylaw making powers to designate specific places where gang insignia may not be worn or displayed.

The Bill is available for public inspection for 15 working days from Monday, 13 August, to Monday, 3 September 2007, during office hours at the following locations:

1. The Wanganui District Council office, 101 Guyton Street, Wanganui;
2. The Wanganui District Library, Queens Park, Wanganui;
3. The Wanganui District Court, Market Place, Wanganui.

Rates rebates
1 July 2007 – 30 June 2008

The income threshold for rates rebate is now $20,000 and the maximum allowable rebate is $500.

Eligibility for a rates rebate is determined by:

• the ratepayer's income for the previous tax year (year ended 31 March 2007)
• the amount of rates (both Wanganui District Council & Horizons Regional Council)
• the number of dependents.

To assist you with your application, please bring in the following:

• evidence of all gross income for the tax year ended 31 March 2007 (this includes income from interest)
• your Wanganui District Council rates assessment for 2007/08
• your Horizons Regional Council rates assessment for 2007/08

Ratepayers need to apply to the Wanganui District Council for a rates rebate. Those who are eligible will then either have their rates reduced by the amount of the rebate, or receive a refund if the rates have been paid in full for the year. The Department of Internal Affairs reimburses the Council from Crown funds.
