At Your Service - Swimming Pools

We provide swimming pools

  • To provide opportunities for swimming and water sports.

How this service is provided

Public swimming pools provide safe, all-year swimming and instructional opportunities to the community. Wanganui's three public pools are the Splash Centre, Gonville and Wanganui East.

Services provided

All pools have:

  1. Changing and shower rooms, toilets, viewing areas with seating, and a shop.
  2. Supervision of swimmers.
  3. Swimming and instructional opportunities such as learn to swim, aerobics etc.
  4. Swimming aids such as boards, floats, lane markers etc.

Individual pools:

  1. Splash Centre - 25m heated indoor pool, learner pool and disabled facilities.
  2. Gonville - 33m heated outdoor pool, learner pool, toddler pool and slide.
  3. Wanganui East - 33m heated outdoor pool, learner pool and toddler pool, hydroslide, BBQ, picnic facilities and lawn area.
  4. Hot showers available for customers at Wanganui East and Splash Centre.

Hours

  • The Splash Centre is open 6am to 8pm weekdays and 8am to 6pm weekends.
  • The outdoor pools are open 20 weeks per year commencing Labour Weekend.

Monitoring the service

  • Community surveys. The Council has a target of 80% satisfaction with all pools.
  • Pool water is tested to ensure that appropriate water quality standards are maintained.

Pools cost the ratepayer an average of $26 per year in addition to the entry charges as follows:

January 15-19: Order of St John - "The Half Price Book Sale"
10am-4pm. Books of a wide range, sport, novels, cooking, classic old books, children's and more. This sale is over 4 days. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 10am-4pm, Friday 10am-8pm. Venue St Johns Centre, 25 Tawa St. Garage sale on also, Saturday 10am-4pm.

January 19: Rowing - Rosebowl
9am. Venue: Whanganui River.

January 19: Summer Flower Show
Gladiolus, Dahlias and other summer flowers. 1pm-5pm. Entry $2. Venue: next door to Farmlands, Wilson Street.

January 19: Athletics
Venue: Westpac Trust Stadium Cooks Gardens.

January 20: Bushy Park Wine and Food Festival
10.30am-6.30pm. Tickets available from the Information Centre, $15 per person. Venue: Bushy Park, Rangitatau East Road, Wanganui.

January 21: Anniversary Ramble and Garden Tour
Eight to 10 summer gardens to view. Maps available from Garden Centres and the Information Centre. Tickets $5 per person.

To January 27: Summer Family Experience
Relax, go kayaking, hiking, swimming, wall climbing, abseiling and more. All happening at Raukawa Adventure Centre. Cost $5 pp. Contact YMCA, phone 348 9255.

To February 6: Department of Conservation Summer Nature Programme
Comprehensive nature programme organised by DoC. Programmes available from Visitor Information Centre, 101 Guyton Street or Department of Conservation, cnr St Hill Street and Ingestre Street. Contact Ridgway, phone 345 2402.

Business Unit Directors

Wanganui District Council is seeking expressions of interest in positions as Directors of the following Council Business Units:

Water Services, Environmental Services, Library.

Business Units are semi-autonomous entities under the Council's organisational structure. They report to the Chief Executive Officer and fulfil a governance role of ensuring the Units operate in a businesslike and socially acceptable manner. Directors should have the following generic attributes:

  • Strong thinking abilities, including the capacity to think strategically.
  • Articulate, able to convey thoughts in a concise and clear manner.
  • Have courage to be counted on important matters and force debate.
  • Have a clear commitment to the responsibilities of a director.
  • Relevant experience and/or the ability to gain an in-depth familiarity with the company and its business area.
  • Ability to objectively take into account all points of view in making decisions.
  • Respect for colleagues, and staff.
  • Unimpeachable business ethics.
  • Proven commercial experience or commercial potential.
  • Positive attitude to public ownership and the principles of good corporate citizenship.
  • A strong affinity with Wanganui District.
  • Ability to understand financial issues.

Company Directors

Wanganui District Council is seeking expressions of interest in positions as Directors of its holding company soon to be established. The Holding Company is a Local Authority Trading Enterprise (LATE) constituted under the Companies Act and in accordance with the Local Government Act.

Wanganui District Council Holdings will be formed in February or March and will own and/or oversee Council trading undertakings. Directors should have the following generic attributes:

  • Articulate, able to convey thoughts in a concise and clear manner.

Heads Road Cemetery

The Heads Road Cemetery was closed for burials in 1915, pursuant to the Cremation Act 1908, subsequently superseded by the Burials and Cremations Act 1964.

The Burials and Cremations Act 1964 has now been amended by the Burial and Cremation Amendment Act 2000. This amendment allows for closed cemeteries to be reopened by order of the Minister of Health.

The Wanganui District Council is applying to the Minister for an opening order to allow burials in the Heads Road Cemetery.

Submissions for or against this proposal are invited from members of the public.
