Issue No. 35 - 2 February 2002

At Your Service - Water Supplies

We provide water supplies

  • To give consumers a continuous supply of water at reasonable volume, pressure and quality and to provide a fire fighting capacity to defined areas.

How this service is provided

Water comes from a combination of an open catchment dam and a series of artesian bores some 20-30km from the city. It is pumped to the city via three large mains which follow State Highway 3. Before storage in three 23,000 cubic metre reservoirs at Westmere, it is treated with chlorine gas. It is then distributed to the various parts of the city via water mains and connections to individual properties. A shut-off valve (toby) is provided at each property boundary. Connections greater than 15mm are metered. Separate rural schemes are operated at Fordell, Mowhanau, Westmere (all potable) and Maxwell (non-potable). Each rural scheme has its own committee.

Services provided

  1. Supply is available to all serviced properties 99 percent of the time.
  2. Flow at point of supply generally exceeds 15 litres per minute.
  3. Pressure at point of supply generally between 15m and 30m head.
  4. Water is chlorinated and meets a Da grading. It is 100 percent coliform (bug) free, pH in range 7.4-8.5; hardness is less than 200 parts per million (calcium). No other chemicals are added.
  5. Unmetered residential connections are restricted to garden sprinkling between the hours of 6pm - 10pm on alternate days.
  6. Service/toby locations on request within five working days.
  7. Fire hydrants with 85 percent of flows to New Zealand Fire Service code of practice.
  8. Rural services vary between each scheme to meet user requirements.

Customer service

  • Quantity and pressure complaints/enquiries will be responded to within 24 hours. Urgent leaks will be responded to within one hour.
  • New domestic connections installed within eight working days of acceptance of quotation.

Monitoring the service

  • Monthly audit of operations.
  • Ministry of Health audit.

2002 climate outlook: a change for our region?

NIWA's Dr Jim Salinger is back to explain the crazy patterns of summer and changes in store for the Wanganui District in 2002.

There are indications that an El Nino may occur later this year. Measurements of the equatorial Pacific and results from climate modelling suggest the development of an El Nino over the next three to six months. However, climate scientists looking at the atmospheric stew say that the jury is out for another six to eight weeks at the moment.

"We have a patient that is showing one or two symptoms at the moment but we have to see if they develop further," Dr Salinger said.

El Nino episodes have been blamed for farming losses of hundreds of millions of dollars in New Zealand, the 1994 Auckland water shortage and the high temperatures and dry weather of the 1997/98 east coast drought.

You're invited to hear more from Dr Salinger about climate predictions for 2002:
