Lake Wiritoa closure

Lake Wiritoa will be closed to the public on Saturday, February 16, for the annual Affco Triathlon.

The beach area will remain open for passive recreation.

Pensioner housing

Pensioner unitCouncil's pensioner units are for older people with limited means who are able to live independently. We have 16 separate complexes in various parts of the city. The weekly rental is $74 for one person and $86 per week for couples. These self-contained units include carpets and drapes. The rental includes ground maintenance.

Prohibited Fire Season

Pursuant to the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977 Section 22, and the District Council Bylaws, notice is given that the lighting of fires in the open air in the Wanganui District is prohibited as from midnight Saturday, 26 January 2008.

The prohibition applies to all of the Wanganui District Council area. The prohibition also includes all urban areas.

And further that this prohibition remains in force until further notice.

Exceptions – the following activities are permitted:

Barbecues lit in properly constructed containers and fuelled with gas.

Council approved incinerators. Only approved incinerators in the urban area may be lit from sunrise to midday.

All existing permits are now cancelled. Applications for special permits should be made to the New Zealand Fire Service (06) 348 0103. Special permits may be granted on case-by-case bases only.

Provided:

That no such fires shall be lit when strong or gusty winds are prevailing.

In all cases a person lighting a fire within the bounds of these exceptions shall remain in attendance at the fire until it is fully extinguished; and any other conditions deemed necessary by the Rural Fire Officer.

It shall be no legal defence against claims for damage caused by any fire that such fire was of the type or lit at the time permitted by this notice.

Wastewater separation update

Wastewater separationCarlton Avenue between Heads Road and Koromiko Road will only be open to traffic entering Carlton Avenue from Heads Road (one way system).

Smithfield Road remains closed from No.23 Smithfield Road to Moore Avenue. Access for residents is still available.

Works will begin in Kawatiri Avenue (at the Carlton Avenue end). The road will remain open.

Carlton AvenueCarlton Avenue between Heads Road and Koromiko Road will be subject to a one-way restriction until 7.00pm Friday, 22 February 2008, for the purpose of sewer drain construction.

Traffic travelling from Heads Road will be permitted to travel up Carlton Avenue.

Traffic will not be permitted to travel down Carlton Avenue between Koromiko Road and Heads Road.

A signposted detour will not be provided for traffic which is not permitted to travel through the restricted section.

Temporary road closure
Smithfield Road - No.23 Smithfield Road to Moore Avenue

Smithfield RoadSmithfield Road between No. 23 Smithfield Road and Moore Avenue will be closed until 7.00pm Friday, 21 March 2008, for the purpose of constructing a new sanitary sewer drain.

This closure does not affect Smithfield Road from Carlton Avenue to No. 23 Smithfield Road.

Vehicle access to properties along the closed section will be available at all times.

A signposted detour will not be provided.

Notice of temporary road closure to vehicular traffic
[Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965]

The Wanganui Road Rodders Club, for the purpose of the annual drag racing, will close Taupo Quay from Heads Road near Suzuki to Mason Terrace including Pacific Place on Sunday, 17 February 2008, from 6.00am to 6.00pm.

During the closure, provision will be made for ordinary vehicular traffic which would otherwise use Taupo Quay.

It will be an offence, under the above regulations, for any person, otherwise than under authority of an authorised permit, to use the road(s)/street(s) for ordinary vehicular traffic during the period of closure.

Notice of proposed temporary road closure to vehicular traffic
[Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965]

The Wanganui District Council Heritage Conference, for the purpose of Heritage Weekend street activities, proposes to close Victoria Avenue from just north of Maria Place to Taupo Quay, but excluding Taupo Quay and Ridgway Street intersections, from 6.00am to 9.00pm on both Saturday, 15 March 2008, and Sunday, 16 March 2008.

During the closure, provision will be made for ordinary vehicular traffic which would otherwise use Victoria Avenue.

Any person objecting to the proposed road closure should lodge notice of his/her objections and grounds thereof in writing before 16 February 2008 at the Wanganui District Council, 101 Guyton Street, Wanganui.
