Community satisfied with quality of life and council services
The survey identifies and measures the perceptions of residents towards council and its services. Council activity ratings were fairly consistent with the previous year and levels of satisfaction with specific services such as the airport, library, Royal Wanganui Opera House and parks and reserves were all over 80%. Satisfaction levels exceeded targets in many areas of council performance and residents felt council was able to respond to community issues/needs and that they were involved in the decision making process. The survey also asked residents about whether they felt that quality of life was the same, better or worse than it was last year. 30% of respondents thought it had improved and 65% thought it was about the same. Wanganui's best attributes were considered to be the closeness of its facilities (19%), its size (17%) and community feel (17%). Mayor Michael Laws welcomed the survey findings and noted, in particular, that 72% of respondents had no intention to leave Wanganui. "Over the past few years we have seen the numbers of people wanting to leave Wanganui decrease from around 50% 10 years ago. "Wanganui is a great place to live, work and raise a family. The survey shows that residents are satisfied and appreciate many of our family-friendly aspects – including the people/community, the availability of outdoor space and great facilities. Council is committed to stopping our population decline and attracting more people to Wanganui. The results of the survey show we are on the right track." The survey showed that 99% of respondents feel safe, all or most of the time, in their home during the day (96% in the evening) and 94% of respondents feel safe, all or most of the time, in the CBD during the day (dropping to 52% in the evening). Perceptions of safety in the CBD is a new measure this year. |
Wanganui youth – text us now!
The Council is trialling Communitxt - an innovative system pioneered by former Wanganui resident and now Fried Marketing director Adam Hutchinson - in an effort to better engage its community, particularly younger residents. The challenge for Wanganui's young people, then, is to put their texting fingers to use and text in their perceptions of Wanganui. Young people between the ages of 12 and 24 are encouraged to text their views on Wanganui – their likes, dislikes and ideas for improvement – to 4882 right now. Text 'Wanganui' then leave a space, include your age and then your comment. Standard text messaging rates will apply. |
