Youth Forums
The Council's Junior (Forms 1 to 4) and Senior (Forms 5 upwards) Youth Forums were held on April 17 and 18 respectively. Participants were representatives from schools in the Wanganui District and the Youth Advice Centre (YAC). Participants individually completed a submission to the Council's 2002/03 Draft Annual Plan. These submissions will be collated and the results will be presented by representatives from each forum as a group submission. Participants also had the opportunity to identify issues for future forums. There was a general positive indication from participants that they are keen to return for future forums. The next forums are planned for August/September 2002. Representatives from each forum will present a report of their forum to the next Community Development Committee meeting on May 1. |

Kerbside recycling
In its Draft Annual Plan (2002/03), the Council signals its intention to save money by stopping the service. This means that unless someone in the private sector decides to provide the service, there will be no kerbside recycling collection from 1 July 2002.
What would it cost to keep the service? If the Council continued to pick up recyclables from the kerbside, each ratepayer would pay $18 per year for that service - but you could save up to $60 per year on rubbish collection fees by saving space in rubbish bags. What will happen to recyclables? It is possible that if the Council withdraws from the service, the private sector may provide a kerbside collection service. There are facilities for recycling at both waste transfer stations so regardless of whether or not the Council picks up recyclables, you will still be able to drop off recyclables at the transfer stations. What do you think?
You can have your say about recycling through the Council's Annual Plan submission process. Pick up copies of our plans and a submission form from the Customer Services Desk or the District Library. You can also read our draft plans on-line and email your submission from our web site. Or ring the Annual Plan hotline on 349 0501 to tell us what you think. Need to know more? For further information about recycling, please contact Stuart Hylton on 349 0001. |
