Issue No. 49 - 11 May 2002
Wastewater discharge to the Whanganui River

Recreational users are advised of potential health risks arising from the discharge of wastewater to the Whanganui River.

Under the coastal permits issued for the wastewater project, the Wanganui District Council is required to regularly inform the public of these potential risks.

At present, the existing combined sewer and stormwater system overflows and discharges wastewater into the Whanganui River during periods of rain. However, this overflow will be eliminated progressively as sewage is removed from stormwater systems on both private and public property throughout urban Wanganui.

Property owners are reminded that all sewage must leave their property in a separate pipe that contains no stormwater by the following dates:

Aramoho - 1 July 2002
Wanganui East/Bastia Hill - 1 July 2003
Central City - 1 July 2004
St John's, Durie Hill, Springvale and Putiki - 1 July 2005
Gonville East/Mosston - 1 July 2006
Gonville West and Castlecliff - 1 July 2007

Notice of Water Supply Investigation Work:
Proposed Wanganui East Bore

The Wanganui District Council has undertaken to investigate additional water sources for the City's water supply. This is particularly important following the closure of the Waitahinga Dam on March 31.

Wanganui Water Services has recently constructed a bore in Aramoho and is now focussing on a site in Wanganui East.

The site is at the back of a block of land, owned by Wanganui District Council, which is accessed via Lenihan Street. The site has been fenced and planted to buffer the area from adjacent residents.

A contract has recently been let to Wanganui Welldrillers Ltd to drill a pilot bore and work began on site on Monday, 6 May 2002. The contract period is for 10 months. Following testing of ground water sources and depending on the outcome, consent may be sought for a permanent ground water extraction.
