The processing and delivery of Wanganui District Council's 2002-2003 Rates Assessments First Instalment has been delayed by technical problems.

As the Council believes the ratepayers of Wanganui should be given at least three weeks notice before payment is due, the discount date and the penalty date for this first instalment are extended to Wednesday, 4 September 2002.

Wanganui District Council notifies its intention to seek the consent of the Minister of Conservation to transfer and release grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella from a fish farm near Warkworth into Lake Wiritoa.

A copy of the Environmental Impact Assessment report may be viewed during ordinary office hours at the Department of Conservation's Wanganui Office at 74 Ingestre Street, Wanganui.

Any person or persons may make a submission in writing to the Director-General of Conservation, c/- The Conservator, Department of Conservation, Private Bag 3016, Wanganui, no later than 28 days from the first publication of this notice.

Submissions should include a contact name and address and the grounds for support or objection to this application for consent.

The Wanganui District Council and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust have been working together to gain an authority under the Historic Places Act 1993 to complete a pathway to the Cenotaph on Queens Park.

As Queens Park was the site of the Rutland Stockade, it is a rare site of national significance and an excellent example of the archaeology of the history of New Zealand between 1847 and 1880s. The site has very high historical and community values to the people of Wanganui and also to Atihaunui a Paparangi as the site of the pa Pukenamu.

Through the efforts of the Trust and the Council, an authority has been granted that will enable an archaeological investigation to be undertaken and, once finalised, allow the path to be constructed to allow easier access to the Cenotaph.

The southern entrance to Virginia Lake has undergone a facelift. The Oamaru stone fence is now completed, as is the paving. The gates have been installed and you will also see some new plantings.

The Virginia Lake Trust is now raising money for stage two of the redevelopment of this area which is expected to cost approximately $18,000. Stage two will include the widening of the steps down to the lake edge, increasing the paved area by the lake edge and the installation of picnic tables.
