Queens Park Path
The Wanganui District Council and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust have been working together to gain an authority under the Historic Places Act 1993 to complete a pathway to the Cenotaph on Queens Park. As Queens Park was the site of the Rutland Stockade, it is a rare site of national significance and an excellent example of the archaeology of the history of New Zealand between 1847 and 1880s. The site has very high historical and community values to the people of Wanganui and also to Atihaunui a Paparangi as the site of the pa Pukenamu. Through the efforts of the Trust and the Council, an authority has been granted that will enable an archaeological investigation to be undertaken and, once finalised, allow the path to be constructed to allow easier access to the Cenotaph. |
