Issue No. 98 - 19 April 2003

At Your Service: Water supplies

We provide water supplies
To give consumers a continuous supply of water at reasonable volume, pressure and quality and to provide a fire fighting capacity to defined areas.

How this service is provided
Water comes from three artesian bores at Kai Iwi and one at Aramoho. It is pumped to the city via several large mains. Before storage in three 23,000 cubic metre reservoirs at Westmere, it is treated with chlorine gas. It is then distributed to the various parts of the city via water mains and connections to individual properties. A shut off valve (toby) is provided at each property boundary. Connections greater than 15mm are metered. Separate rural schemes are operated at Fordell, Mowhanau, Westmere (all potable) and Maxwell (non-potable). Each rural scheme has its own committee.

Services provided

  1. Supply is available to all serviced properties 99% of the time.
  2. Flow at point of supply generally exceeds 15 litres per minute.
  3. Pressure at point of supply generally between 15m and 30m head.
  4. Water is chlorinated and meets a Da grading. It is 100% coliform (bug) free, pH in range 7.4-8.5; hardness is less than 220 parts per million (calcium). Ozone is used to treat water from the Aramoho bore.
  5. Unmetered residential connections are restricted to garden sprinkling between the hours of 6pm - 10pm on alternate days.
  6. Service/toby locations on request within five working days.
  7. Fire hydrants with 85% of flows to New Zealand Fire Service code of practice.
  8. Rural services vary between each scheme to meet user requirements.

Lifting of Prohibited Fire Season

Pursuant to the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977 and the District Council By-laws, notice is given that the prohibited fire season, for all the area in the Wanganui Fire District, is hereby lifted as from midnight on Saturday, 5 April 2003.

Fires in all the above areas will require permits until further notice.

Applications for permits should be made to the New Zealand Fire Service during normal business hours on phone 348 0103.

One week's advance notice for small fires and three weeks' advance notice for larger burns (two hectares or more in size), which will require a fire plan, is required for permits in the rural area to allow for an inspection to be made.

Fire permits will be issued on Thursdays and Fridays.

The Department of Conservation issues permits for its areas.

Water conservation - the hose code and sprinkler code

Water Services thanks the people of Wanganui for the conservation effort made to date that has ensured sufficient water supplies for all water users.

Everyone is reminded that sprinklers can only be used on even numbered days for even numbered houses and odd numbered days for odd numbered houses, between the hours of 6pm and 10pm. Hand held hoses can be used at any time.

The best water results for the garden are achieved from watering in the early evening.
