Total fire ban strong possibility for Wanganui District - 9/01/2008

Extremely dry conditions have raised a strong possibility of a total fire ban being imposed on the Wanganui District.

"The recent rain has barely dampened the ground," Wanganui District Council Emergency Manager Max Benseman said today.

"With the 14 day forecast indicating showers on January 19 and no real rain until January 22, a total prohibition on fires may have to be imposed. The Emergency Management team and Principal Rural Fire Officer are keeping a close watch on conditions and, unless we get some significant rain, a total ban may be necessary."

A total fire ban would mean no fires can be lit in the open air in the rural and urban fire districts. No fire permits would be issued and only gas-fuelled barbecues could be used.
