Kiwi Street School buildings being demolished - 22/07/2008Wanganui Deputy Mayor Dot McKinnon today welcomed the news that demolition of the former Kiwi Street School buildings has started.
"The Council can take considerable credit for getting rid of this eyesore," Cr McKinnon said.
"We have been lobbying for some time for the removal of these buildings which have been repeatedly tagged and vandalised. It has been a particular concern of mine and recently I wrote to Education Minister the Hon. Chris Carter to outline the ongoing problems and seek some action.
"The Minister has responded, acknowledging the ongoing security issues and advising that the buildings will be demolished. I understand that this work has already started and the Council and community will be delighted at this good news."
The Minister also advised that as part of the disposal process, the property is shortly to be assigned to the Maori Protection Mechanism which is an assessment of any related Treaty of Waitangi claims. The process could take six to 12 months and will result in property either being land banked or released for sale on the open market. |
