Toowoomba street appeal cancelled but fundraising continues - 10/02/2011

“A street appeal planned for Friday, February 11, to raise funds for the Toowoomba flood appeal has been cancelled,” says appeal organiser Cr Ray Stevens.

“We have made the decision to cancel the street appeal due to a lack of volunteers available to help out on the day. It is disappointing but we have a number of other fundraising activities planned.

“Along with Cr Jack Bullock and some willing volunteers (known as the “Angels”), I will be visiting the pubs, clubs and restaurants of Wanganui during the evening on February 11 asking for donations to the appeal.

“We are also hoping to auction items donated to the appeal by local businesses at the River Traders Market on Saturday, February 26. Cr Jack and I will be talking with everyone who donated items over the next few days, to confirm they are happy for their donations to be part of the auction.”

In addition to appeal t-shirts for sale for $25 from the Customer Services Counter at the Wanganui District Council offices in Guyton Street, there are a number of static collection points with donation buckets. These are located at the Council’s Customer Services Counter, Davis Central City Library, Gonville Café Library, the Sarjeant Gallery, BP and Caltex garages, NZ Post on Victoria Avenue and the Wanganui branches of ANZ and Westpac.

“Wanganui people have always stepped up to the mark to help people both in New Zealand and overseas and I’m sure this appeal will be another success.”

Wanganui’s sister city of Toowoomba was severely affected by major flooding which swept through Queensland, Australia, in early January this year.
