Mayor first to register for 2013 Master Games - 6/08/2012

Wanganui’s Mayor Annette Main is the first entrant to register for the 2013 New Zealand Masters Games, being held in Wanganui from 1-10 February 2013.

The Games have been held in alternate years in Wanganui and Dunedin since they began. Mayor Annette Main took part in the first Masters Games in Wanganui competing in a cycling event, and in walking events in past years.

“I’m looking forward to again taking part in the Games next year and have registered for cycling events including a time trial. Cycling has a long history in our family and I am sure my father will also again be a competitor,” said Mayor Main.

“The Masters Games is a well-established and well-known event for Wanganui and not only brings large numbers of visitors from both New Zealand and overseas into our district, but involves large numbers of local people both as competitors and volunteers.

“I like the fact that there are events for people of all abilities and that while the event does cater for the serious competitor, people like me who welcome the challenge of training to take part are also made to feel welcome.

“Council supports the Masters Games financially acknowledging the tremendous economic impact the event has for our local economy. We know that many competitors have returned to live in Wanganui after enjoying what life here offers.

“I encourage everyone to take part if they are able, if not as a competitor then as a supporter, helping us to make the most of our wonderful Wanganui sporting facilities and by showing our visitors unbeatable hospitality.”
