Mt Tongariro eruption: Update 2 – 11.30am Tuesday, 7 August 2012 - 7/08/2012

Wanganui Civil Defence Emergency Management continues to monitor the effects of the Mt Tongariro eruption.

The Ministry of Civil Defence Emergency Management has advised that at this stage there are no signs of further activity on the mountain following the eruption.

Ash has fallen locally around the mountain and is being blown east so there is no immediate concern for Wanganui.

Wanganui District Council’s Emergency Manager Max Benseman says the only potential problem for Wanganui could be from ash if the wind direction changes. There are no concerns that the eruption will affect the Whanganui River.

General information about what to do if there is a volcanic eruption is available here (PDF, 15KB).
