Cr Pepperell: a great councillor doing great work - 18/05/2006

Mayor Michael Laws has discounted claims from arts activists that Cr Sue Pepperell has left Wanganui permanently, and therefore should resign from her role as a district councillor and chairperson of the council's youth committee.

"Cr Pepperell's partner is on secondment to Police HQ in Wellington and, not unnaturally, she joins him as often as she can. She continues to fulfil her council responsibilities, attends more council meetings than some stationary representatives, and has single-handedly created the best youth committee and youth council in the country. She is a great councillor doing great work.

"Sue discussed her personal arrangements with me earlier in the year and my view remains that so long as she is performing her council responsibilities, then she remains a valued member of the council team. She is more than discharging her responsibilities – just recently she led a youth council retreat over a weekend.

"Sue is a hard-working, independently-minded councillor making a real contribution to Wanganui. That is more than can be said for her male detractors."
