Civil Defence - situation overview - 8/08/2006

Matarawa Stream

The Matarawa Stream is likely to enter some properties in the Wakefield Street/Ikitara Road area. Residents were warned of the rising stream earlier today and members of the Civil Defence rescue team are currently going door-to-door to advise residents.

Hackett Street

There is surface flooding in Hackett Street, Wanganui East. About five properties have been sandbagged and the situation is being monitored.

Whanganui River

The Whanganui River is high but currently not causing major concern. The Whanganui River Road and rowing club sheds are likely to be affected.

Welfare

Civil Defence has contacted most of the people on the affected rural roads. All have power and phones. A few are isolated with slips but there are no major concerns at present.

SH3 at Marybank (south of Wanganui) – single lane
SH3 north of Turakina – single lane
SH3 north of Kai Iwi – single lane

Hazardous but passable
No 3 Line is passable but many parts of the road are covered with water.
