No Council decision on participation in Ohakea regional trust - 15/05/2007

Deputy Mayor Dot McKinnon today said the Wanganui District Council had not decided whether or not to participate in a regional trust to promote the RNZAF Ohakea Visitor Centre.

"A media release distributed last Friday states that the Wanganui District Council is one of the representatives on the new trust," Cr McKinnon said.

"That is not correct – this Council has made no policy decision on whether to be involved. I have attended one meeting of the working party which has been discussing the trust concept but made it clear that the Council would need to discuss the proposal and make a formal decision on any involvement."

The working party includes representatives of RNZAF Base Ohakea, Destination Manawatu, Friends of the Museum and councils.

"I received 24 hours' notice that there was to be a meeting of the working party last Thursday. I could not attend the meeting and obviously the media release was a result of that meeting. They should not have assumed involvement before all of the parties concerned had reported back to the working party. So, at this stage, the Wanganui District Council is not a member of the regional trust."
