Somme Parade walkway & cycleway

An exciting new project for Wanganui! (images below)

After the outstanding success of the council's riverfront walkway development, Mayor Michael Laws says that the proposed Somme Parade walk and cycleway "will make the Whanganui River an even more enriching focus for our city and community".

The proposal was aired at the council's meeting on 22 September 2008. It expands the walkway from the 'Waimarie' to the Dublin Street bridge. It features a combination of paving and wooden walkways, is flood-proof, and includes a variety of large sculptures and resting points.

The project would attract a 72% subsidy from NZ Transport Agency and external funding from outside agencies.
