Southern Entranceway:
Gateway will be best in New Zealand

"We are going to have the best entrance to any city anywhere in New Zealand!" says Mayor Michael Laws.

At its meeting on 19 October 2009, the Council chose a 'welcome sculpture' to be installed at the southern entrance to Wanganui. The sculpture 'Encounter' was one of three proposals by Mark Southcombe of Void Architecture Research Urbanism.

The ‘welcome sculpture’ – an architectural exclamation mark that welcomes visitors off the Marybank straight at the Putiki corner and the intersections of Wikitoria Road and SH4 – will be a key part of our new image and a real talking point for residents and visitors.

The sculpture ‘Encounter’ (pictured below) is an abstract representation of the greeting that occurs when people meet: “Kia ora, I am Wanganui on the banks of the Whanganui River, between the mountains of Taranaki and the Central Plateau. Welcome visitor to our place; or if you are returning… welcome home.”
