Public Meeting - February 12
Proposed Private Plan Changes – Tawa Street, Wanganui

The Wanganui District Council Property Group is currently considering the rezoning of two properties on Tawa Street, Wanganui. 25 Tawa Street is an open space area partly occupied by St John's Ambulance. 39 to 41 Tawa Street is currently occupied by the now closed Gonville Baths and Hall and Kokohuia Hall. Both sites are currently zoned Reserves and Open Space and it is proposed to rezone these sites to Residential. View map (PDF, 12KB).

The Council is considering the disposal of these properties as part of a divestment strategy that aims to generate capital funding for community recreational facility projects. Both sites have been identified in the Council's Long-Term Community Plan for possible divestment and have also been referred to in the Council's recently approved Parks and Open Space Strategy.

Rezoning these properties to Residential will potentially allow for other activities consistent with the residential neighbourhood in which they are located. The proposed rezoning will be carried out by way of Plan Changes. These will be publicly notified once informal consultation is complete and you will have a chance to make a submission at this time.

A public meeting will be held at the Eugene Crotty Complex Hall at 30 Tawa Street on Tuesday, 12 February 2008, from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. You are invited to attend this meeting where a representative from Wanganui District Council Property Group and their planning consultants, Opus International Consultants, will be available to discuss the proposed plan changes.

Rates rebates
1 July 2007 – 30 June 2008

The income threshold for rates rebate is now $20,000 and the maximum allowable rebate is $500.

Eligibility for a rates rebate is determined by:

  • the ratepayer's income for the previous tax year (year ended 31 March 2007)
  • the amount of rates (both Wanganui District Council & Horizons Regional Council)
  • the number of dependents.

To assist you with your application, please bring in the following:

  • evidence of all gross income for the tax year ended 31 March 2007 (this includes income from interest)
  • your Wanganui District Council rates assessment for 2007/08
  • your Horizons Regional Council rates assessment for 2007/08

Ratepayers need to apply to the Wanganui District Council for a rates rebate. Those who are eligible will then either have their rates reduced by the amount of the rebate, or receive a refund if the rates have been paid in full for the year. The Department of Internal Affairs reimburses the Council from Crown funds.
