Issue No. 386 - 23 October 2008
Our team needs your support

Steelform WanganuiMayor Michael Laws today said that the hosting of the Meads Cup final - at Cooks Gardens on Saturday - is not simply a fantastic result for Wanganui rugby but "an outstanding opportunity for our city to promote itself on the national stage."

"Guy Lennox, Denning Tyrell and the Wanganui team have been the outstanding - and only unbeaten team in the New Zealand Heartland Championship. But it is the manner of their wins that has been so impressive. They play an attractive, attacking brand of rugby."

Mayor Laws, who has sponsored the team the past three years, says that "rugby matters in terms of promoting a positive profile of a city or region. Every win has generated positive headlines for Wanganui throughout the country."

"To host the Meads Cup will generate real revenue - both visitor and commercial - for the Wanganui district. I'd like to thank the team for that priceless national exposure."

The Wanganui District Council will be supporting the team during finals week by flying the rugby union colours and staff dressing in Wanganui rugby colours.
