Enrol now for Summer School of the Arts
10-16 January 2010

Summer School of ArtsWhanganui UCOL's Summer School of the Arts programme for 2010 starts on January 10 – and places are filling fast on some courses so enrol now!

The Summer School provides people from around New Zealand and abroad with the opportunity to participate in a week of intensive workshops, taught by leading national and international artists in a vibrant and friendly atmosphere of creative production and interaction.

This time around the Summer School will have 18 seven-day courses on offer, covering the full range of visual and object arts including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, textile and fibre art, glass and jewellery. Also on offer are courses in creative writing, culinary arts and fashion. There really is something for everyone, and you need not be experienced – just keen!

Among the international artists who will be tutoring a course this year are the widely acclaimed printmaker Ron Pokrasso (USA), renown mezzotint printmaker Stuart Duffin (Scotland), international glass artists Brock Craig and Jeff Burnette (both from Canada) and textile artist Fiona Wright (India).

The Summer School provides a dynamic learning experience with tutors selected not only for their special knowledge, but also for their ability and their desire to share that expertise with others. The Summer School promises to be a stimulating environment where you will be able to totally immerse yourself in the creative process.

Wanganui team to help rebuild Samoan village

Samoa appeal logoWanganui has raised more than $40,000 for the Samoa tsunami relief appeal – and now a team of locals is preparing to travel to Samoa to help rebuild a village.

Cr Ray Stevens, who is leading Wanganui's relief effort, told this week's Finance and Infrastructure Committee meeting that a 12-person team will travel to Samoa next month. A member of the local Samoan community will accompany the team to the village of Satitoa.

"This village is situated in one of the worst affected areas of the tsunami," Cr Stevens said.

"Satitoa has a population between 700 and 1000 and unfortunately lost 15 people in the tragedy. At least 90 percent of the village buildings were lost or damaged, including the school and churches. It is these community facilities that will be the focus of the Council's support."

The team will leave on December 5, returning on December 15. The Mayoral Relief Fund is contributing $7000 to the project and on Tuesday the Finance and Infrastructure Committee recommended that the Council approve funding of $6000 to assist with costs.

"The overall benefits to the Wanganui community for such a project are great and it will send a clear message to the rest of the country that Wanganui cares and that the whole community is behind this," Cr Stevens said.

"Thirteen people are giving of their time and, in many cases, their employers are supporting them by giving extra leave as their contribution. In economic terms when measuring benefits it is very easy to quantify in dollar terms; however, on a project like this, it is difficult to measure. The measure can only be the 'ripple' effect of 13 people from a broad cross section of the community representing Wanganui, a city that does have a warm heart, helping to restore family life in Samoa."

The Council thanks the following businesses for their generous support for the trip to Samoa:
Gilbertsons Mitre 10 Mega, Wanganui Toyota, H & A Print, Sport Wanganui, Watson Security, Totalspan, Property Brokers, Rivers Speed & Spares, Garmac Engineering, Opus, Wanganui Chronicle, Double 'S' Motordrome, Ag Challenge, Wanganui District Council Social Club, Marty Condon, YMCA, McDonalds Equipment.
