Issue No. 48 - 4 May 2002
Queens Park Landscape Plan - we need comments from the public

Public comment is invited on the proposal to redevelop the Queens Park landscape. The key points of the landscape plan are as follows:

  • The eastern and western boundaries of the park are planted in totara trees grown from cuttings from the Wanganui area.
  • Palm avenues are created at key points in the park, such as the Cameron Terrace entrance.
  • Important views, such as those north to Mt Ruapehu, are preserved through planting of lower growing species such as kowhai and colourful native grasses found in our region.
  • The plan reflects the importance of Maori and European history in the park.
  • The plan is consistent with the objectives set out in the 1992 Queens Park Management Plan.
  • The plan is in sympathy with the developments proposed by the Library and Sarjeant Gallery.
  • The project would be staged and the investment of $1.5M spread over five or 10 years.
  • This investment on average amounts to an extra $75-$100 total per ratepayer, or between $8 and $15 a year over the next five to 10 years.

For more information please email Eric Sim or Marie Gorinski at the Council, or phone 349 0001.

Public comments can also be posted to Eric Sim, Recreation and Culture Co-ordinator, PO Box 637, Wanganui. Comments should be clearly marked Submissions to Queens Park Landscape Plan and must be received by 21 May 2002.

Wastewater discharge to the Whanganui River

Recreational users are advised of potential health risks arising from the discharge of wastewater to the Whanganui River.

Under the coastal permits issued for the wastewater project, the Wanganui District Council is required to regularly inform the public of these potential risks.

At present, the existing combined sewer and stormwater system overflows and discharges wastewater into the Whanganui River during periods of rain. However, this overflow will be eliminated progressively as sewage is removed from stormwater systems on both private and public property throughout urban Wanganui.

Property owners are reminded that all sewage must leave their property in a separate pipe that contains no stormwater by the following dates:

Aramoho - 1 July 2002
Wanganui East/Bastia Hill - 1 July 2003
Central City - 1 July 2004
St John's, Durie Hill, Springvale and Putiki - 1 July 2005
Gonville East/Mosston - 1 July 2006
Gonville West and Castlecliff - 1 July 2007

For further information, please contact the Separation Hotline 349 0548.
