Council will seek destruction of attack dog - 9/09/2009

Wanganui District Council Customer Services Manager Melanie Heron says the dog which attacked seven-year-old Brendon Rei in Tregenna Street last night has been identified and is being held in the pound.

“The Staffordshire bull terrier cross was uplifted on Wednesday and is in the pound while we take statements and collect further evidence,” Ms Heron said.

Ms Heron praised the work done by the Animal Control staff in investigating the attack.

“Brendon was a brave young man and, with his help in identifying the dog and after a fair amount of investigation from our Animal Control team, we’ve located and impounded the dog.

“We will be seeking destruction of the dog, in line with Council’s zero tolerance policy on dog attacks. The zero tolerance policy is fair – it ensures everyone knows where they stand, and what to expect if they’ve been involved in a dog attack.”
