Speak up, speak out, be heard! New Youth Councillors wanted for Youth Committee - 9/02/2010

If you are aged between 12 and 24 years and want to have a say on local issues affecting youth, then why not become a Youth Councillor?

Wanganui District Council’s Youth Committee is looking for approximately six new Youth Councillors as a number of the current Youth Councillors are leaving to pursue exciting opportunities for study and work.

The Youth Committee is recognised by the Wanganui District Council’s official committee structure, which ensures the voice of the committee is heard and is able to influence Council’s decision making.

Being part of the Youth Committee requires commitment. Councillors attend formal meetings every six weeks, a variety of workshops and meetings, as well as organise and get involved with a range of activities and events.

Cr Danny Jonas, Chair of the Youth Committee, encourages any young person interested to apply. “The Youth Committee is a great opportunity for our young people to get involved and have a say in what happens in Wanganui”.

“Every year we get an injection of vibrant and passionate young people who really make a difference. They are improving what’s available for youth in the city, as well as keeping council updated and informed on youth issues, ideas and opinions.

“Last year’s committee got involved a wide range of activities including attending a Youth Committee retreat, ran the 2nd Picnic in the Park, organised the $20 Bus to the Big Day Out and hosted the Regional Youth Connect event with the Ministry of Youth Development. Individual members attended the National Youth Forum on Diversity and were representatives on Youth Access to Alcohol action group, Underground Fashion Show Project and YMCA activities.”

Taking part in the Youth Committee is a rewarding experience so if you want to know more check out www.wanganui.govt.nz for details and an application form. Applications close on 26 February 2010.
