Mayor slams Tram Shed hysteria - 16/04/2010

Mayor Michael Laws has today described the reaction to moving the riverfront tram shed as “nothing short of hysteria”.

“This has become ridiculous stuff and a media beat-up.

“From the first instant, Council advised the tram trust that there could be no guarantee of the current siting. But it will be on the riverfront and it will link with existing and future amenities. We are in a process of consultation that involves discussions with all interested parties.

“What Jim Auker is demanding is that we make a decision independent of that process. We’re not going to do that - and that is because there are other developments that will directly affect the tram and its siting. That includes an anticipated Antiquities Trust and development around the PS Waimarie.”

Mayor Laws said that there appeared to be a breakdown of communication within the Tramways Trust.

“Our chief executive’s correspondence and message has been clear from Day One. It is similarly ludicrous to suggest a $1 million cost for the shifting. That is more hysterical gibberish.”
