Improved access planned for Dublin Street Bridge underpass - 17/06/2011Work is due to start at the end of June on extending and improving the Dublin Street Bridge underpass to allow for cycles and mobility scooters, Mayor Annette Main said today.
“We currently have a footpath under the Somme Parade side of the bridge which is suitable for pedestrians but difficult for cyclists and impossible for people on mobility scooters,” Mayor Main said.
“At the moment, mobility scooters have to go out onto the road to get to the other side of the bridge which is dangerous in such a busy traffic area.
“We need to provide a safer pedestrian and cycle link to the Somme Parade shared pathway on either side of the bridge. The plan is to build a new cycle/mobility scooter path alongside the footpath under the bridge, with the existing path remaining in place for pedestrians.”
The new path will be built at a lower level than the existing path to give more head clearance for users.
The work is expected to be completed by November 2011.
