Mayor to officially open REAL Whanganui Festival - 29/08/2011Wanganui is gearing up for a big weekend, with a powhiri at Putiki Marae for the USA Eagles rugby team on Sunday, September 4, followed by the official opening of the REAL Whanganui Festival.
Wanganui is hosting the Eagles for six days in the lead-up to Rugby World Cup 2011. The team will be officially welcomed at an invitation-only powhiri at Putiki Marae on Sunday afternoon.
After the powhiri, Mayor Annette Main will travel with the Eagles by waka on the Whanganui River from Putiki to the Union Boat Club. The waka is due to arrive at the boat ramp at approximately 4.00pm.
I encourage Wanganui residents to come along to the riverbank on Sunday afternoon to give the Eagles a very warm welcome to Wanganui, Mayor Main said.
It is a great opportunity to see the team and then to join in the celebration of the launch of the REAL Whanganui Festival.
The Festival launch will be held near the Waimarie berth around 4.00pm after Mayor Main and the Eagles disembark the waka. Mayor Main will officially open the festival, which is being run in conjunction with Rugby World Cup 2011 and includes more than 70 events over seven weeks. The Literary Festival and Glass Festival are included in the REAL Whanganui Festival. There will be entertainment and information available about the festival.
