Council backing UIM Jet Sprint World Series - 3/02/2012

Wanganui Mayor Annette Main says the wanganui.com UIM Jet Sprint World Series this month is another fantastic opportunity to showcase Wanganui.

Wanganui’s Shelter View track will be the venue for the second round (February 18-19) of the two-round World Series. The first round takes place in the Wairarapa on February 11-12. Teams from Australia, New Zealand and Canada will compete in two categories for the coveted World Series title.

“These are exciting times for Wanganui, with the World Series following hard on the heels of the VCC International Rally,” Mayor Main said.

“It’s another wonderful opportunity for us to show national and international visitors what Wanganui has to offer. We’re also providing an option for people who can’t make it to the events by live streaming the action on our wanganui.com website. While they’re there, they’ll be able to check out other Wanganui events and activities, as well as business and lifestyle options.”

Wanganui District Council’s Economic Development Manager Allan MacGibbon said that with the first round being held in the Wairarapa, it provided an opportunity to connect with the Wellington visitor market.

“A major part of our visitor campaign is to attract families for short breaks and this will be a chance for us to showcase Wanganui to the Wellington market,” Mr MacGibbon said.

“Jet sprints is a growing sport, it’s family orientated and it’s held all over the North Island. As it continues to grow, it will improve Wanganui’s profile, especially as Wanganui teams are dominant in the sport.

“It’s a chance for us to celebrate local people being successful in business and in sport and Wanganui can leverage off those local success stories to attract more visitors and raise our profile.

“In recognition of that opportunity, we have naming rights through providing sponsorship from our marketing budget. All promotional material produced will be retained for future use.”
