Castlecliff Domain gazebo destroyed by fire - 13/06/2012

A gazebo near the barbecue area at Castlecliff Domain has been destroyed by fire. The fire took place at the weekend and the damage caused means the gazebo cannot be repaired and, if replaced, would need to be totally rebuilt.

Cr Ray Stevens, Chair of the Infrastructure and Property Committee, describes the act of whoever caused the fire as “mindless”.

“I am really disappointed that selfish people have set fire to this public property which has resulted in a loss of amenity for everyone who uses the domain.

“Council staff and contractors put a lot of hard work into ensuring our parks and recreation areas are well maintained for the enjoyment of the whole community. This includes a wide range of buildings and structures, so for people to mindlessly destroy such property is beyond my understanding.

“If a decision is made to rebuild the gazebo that cost will be a direct one to council so every rate payer in Wanganui is penalised when people act in this way.”

Work has taken place on the gazebo to make the structure safe and the site will be cleared shortly.
